We all experience moments when life feels overwhelming, and finding calm can seem impossible. Catherine Churchill, Health Coach, NBC-HWC, ICF-PCC, a provider at First Stop Health, shares a powerful strategy to calm your mind when stress takes over. Learn how to practice the S.T.O.P. technique below.
S - Stop
Stop or pause whatever you’re doing and allow yourself to be present.
T - Take
Take a few deep breaths and focus on your breathing. Breathe in slowly through your nose and exhale through pursed lips. With each inhale, feel your body relax.
O - Observe
Observe your thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations without any judgment. What thoughts do you notice? What emotions are present? How does your body feel? Tune in and sit with whatever comes for a few moments.
P - Proceed
Proceed and respond to the situation with a more mindful approach. What’s one thing you can focus on right now? What is your most important priority? Narrow down your focus into one small step at a time.
Whenever you’re feeling overwhelmed, you can practice S.T.O.P. to lower stress, calm the mind, and gain perspective in the moment!
