Sometimes better health starts with having the right support at the right time and someone who is there to keep showing up with you.
First Stop Health provider Kevin Capps saw that firsthand with one of his patients.
When Kevin first met Carrie, she was going through an especially difficult period. Her mother had recently passed away, and at the same time, she was managing several health concerns, including diabetes and PCOS. Her A1C was around 12, and she was taking insulin, a GLP-1 medication and metformin.
There was a lot to navigate. But her care didn't end after that first appointment.
Building progress over time
Through multiple follow-up visits and support from Carrie's care team, Kevin had the opportunity to stay connected with her as she worked toward her health goals.
Over time, he began seeing changes.
Carrie started working out regularly and steadily losing weight. To date, Kevin says she has lost about 15 pounds.
But the progress she noticed wasn't limited to the number on the scale.
“She can't believe the energy that she has now, and she is enjoying her new habits.”
For Kevin, seeing that excitement and motivation is an important part of what makes the work meaningful.
The goal isn't simply to address what brings someone to an appointment that day. It's to help patients continue moving forward and make caring for their health something they can sustain.
More than a single visit
Carrie's experience also demonstrates why ongoing relationships can matter in virtual care.
Kevin points to multiple follow-ups and a team approach as important parts of her journey. Rather than treating care as a one-time interaction, that approach creates opportunities to check in, understand what's changing and continue supporting the patient as her needs evolve.
It's also part of what Kevin values about being a First Stop Health provider.
“I've seen huge changes in our patients and so much gratitude from people who are feeling better, have more energy, and are experiencing better overall health. Having the opportunity to connect with people and make care easier to access for those who really need it is huge for me.”
The difference compassionate care can make
Every patient's health journey is different. Progress can take time, and it doesn't always follow a straight line.
But easier access to providers, continued follow-up and a care team invested in the person behind the appointment can help create an environment where progress is possible.
For Carrie, that progress looks like new habits, regular exercise, weight loss, more energy and renewed motivation to continue.
And for Kevin, it's a reminder of why compassionate, connected care matters in the first place.
